The city even came fourth in Lonely Planet’s “Top 10 Cities For Travel – 2013.” Lonely Planet explained, 'Best in Travel is all about identifying destinations which offer the traveller something special. Derry is a brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exciting arts and music scene.'
‘The Walled City’ has always had a vibrant arts scene. However, in 2013, this will move up a notch with hundreds of cultural events taking place throughout the year around the city. Some examples include the 10-day All Ireland Fleadh, the world’s biggest Irish festival, hosting the Turner Prize, a Jazz festival, and the Earhart Festival among hundreds of others.
Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness said he was "bursting with pride". He said that he hoped the event would leave a lasting legacy in the city. "This is a fantastic opportunity for the city. People are becoming very excited. It's an incredible opportunity which will bring new jobs and help transform the city."
