20 States Sign Petitions To Leave The United States

ObamaSOTUBy Denis Foynes

About 157,000 in 20 states have signed in a section of the whitehouse.gov website called "We the People."

At the moment 16,000 people and counting have signed the petition in Louisiana. The number is up to 26,000 in Texas which more than needed to get some sort of "response" from the White House. The other petitions have 30 days to get enough signatures (25,000) to receive an official White House response.

Most of the petitions merely quote the opening line of America's Declaration of Independence from Britain, in which America's founders stated their right to "dissolve the political bands" and form a new nation. Many also complain that there has been “breaches in American rights” under the Obama administration.

However, many states would simply not survival economically without Washington. Louisiana for example is heavily dependent of federal spending.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) wanted to distance himself from the petition. The Dallas Morning News stated that the Republican governor's press secretary wrote in an email, "Gov. Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government."

The last time a state successfully seceded it was followed by Civil War. However, these petitions will in all likelihood only generate headlines. They are important for one reason, they show how divided America is becoming.

Here are the 20 states-

-Alabama

-Arkansas

-Colorado

-Florida

-Indiana

-Kentucky

-Louisiana

-Michigan

-Mississippi

-Montana

-New Jersey

-New York

-North Carolina

-North Dakota

-Oregon

-Tennessee

-Texas

-Georgia
